Preparations are underway for Okinawa Prefecture Governor Denny Tamaki to again visit the US at the beginning of March. The trip was confirmed by multiple sources on 20 January.

The governor was re-elected to a second term last September under the banner of his opposition to the relocation of the US Military Futenma Airfield in Ginowan to Henoko in Nago, both within the prefecture. On the basis of that victory, the governor intends to plead once again to relevant US Government officials for a review of the relocation plan. Governor Tamaki last visited the US in October of 2019. During his visit to Washington, he expects to hold discussions with senior staff in the US Departments of State and Defense, members of Congress and others.

The coalition of All Okinawa, which gathers opposition to the Henoko relocation is now in its third term of holding the prefectural administration, if the late former Governor Takeshi Onaga’s term is included. However, the Japanese Government has not altered its current plan which it claims to be “the only solution”. So, the stalemate continues.

In his series of discussions, Governor Tamaki will point out that opposition to the relocation of the base within the prefecture by his prefecture’s population has been repeatedly shown. The governor will also bring up the weakness of a section of the seabed where the landfill for the base has been proposed. Due to the Prefecture’s refusal of permission for design changes, that section is still untouched.

The governor expects to make the case that relocation of the base outside the prefecture or even outside the Nation is the present reality.

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

  2. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  3. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
