On 16 January, it was learned that Prefectural Public Office Director Noboru Kakazu (59) had handed in his resignation letter to Governor Denny Tamaki. The resignation became clear through a Prefecture source close to Kakazu.
Noboru Kakazu was born in Miyako City. It is rumored that Miyako Mayor Kazuyuki Sakimi has floated a proposal that he would like to appoint Kakazu to an important position such as vice-mayor. According to the source, Kakazu submitted his letter of resignation to the governor at the beginning of January. However, Kakazu responded to queries from this paper with, “I can’t say anything about it.”
The timing of the resignation remains unclear. However, between the middle of February and the end of March, the regular February session of the Prefectural Assembly will be held to deliberate the first budget proposal for 2023. It seems Kakazu intends to work until the end of the regular 2022 session and then resign with one year left in his term. According to sources in Miyakojima City, Mayor Zakimi seems to be considering appointing Kakazu to follow current Vice-mayor Hideki Ikawa (62).
Kakazu took office as Public Office Director in April of 2022. The Public Office Director is the chief director in the Prefecture and is in charge of the prefectural administration’s most important tasks, such as US Military base issues. Moreover, 2022 was a pivotal year with such events as the 50th anniversary of Reversion to Japan and the start of the Okinawa Promotion Plan. The governor tasked these to Kakazu, whose resume included such items as Director of Labor, Commerce, and Industry, as well as involvement in important policies in the prefectural administration.
Ikawa had been a prefectural accounts manager and such before taking office as vice-mayor in June of 2021. The job has a 4 year term.

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
