Scientists and others within Japan are requesting the establishment of a national museum of natural history in Okinawa. With that in consideration, the Prefecture is reinforcing its efforts, with Governor Denny Tamaki at the fore.
A project team has been set up and is being promoted across departments. In 2023, a prefectural people’s committee will be established including private citizens. The concept is to plan a fermentation of opportunities for the prefecture’s people.
The focus is not just to specialize on the natural history of Asia with its treasure chest of a plethora of organisms. Okinawa was considered a suitable place for its scholarship and geography. The aim is also the project’s ripple effect on economics, tourism, and such in employment, the gathering of customers, and the development of human resource development tied to research and educational organizations.
Governor Tamaki, his vice governor, gathered with all department heads to hold their first common conference on 14 February and confirmed the plan to establish a prefectural people’s conference and such. The meeting also shared their intention that the natural history museum should be for education and research based on collection of specimens.
Governor Tamaki stated, “It’s essential to proceed at full speed on this project. The concerned departments are coordinated, and I’d like them to work together on its implementation.” From those present, it was brought up that leaders from the private sector would be indispensable for the establishment of a prefectural people's committee and attractions.
A Japanese committee of scholars suggested in 2010 that a national museum of natural history be established inside Japan. Because specimens from the disaster area and such for the museum were lost in the East Japan Great Disaster of 2011, they recommended the site go to Okinawa.
In 2020, a site and a plan, with priority on having to proceed with the greatest speed possible, were linked. In 2016, experts and others assembled the National Okinawa Natural History Museum Establishment Preparatory Committee. In 2019, the Prefecture lauded its endeavors for attractions in its Okinawa 21st Century Vision Basic Plan and again, in 2022, in its New 21st Century Vision Basic Plan.
From 2022, workers connected to the economy, tourism, and academia and the Government have struggled to find successful methods both for the establishment and its attractions, while setting in place a project promotion committee to organize the municipalities. In addition, momentum has been fostered by holding symposiums and such.

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
