On 20 March, the Republic of Palau and Okinawa Prefecture agreed between them on a plan to set up a working team (WT) as early as April on the topics of fisheries and oceanology based on a memorandum of understanding (MOU) regarding the strengthening of friendly relations.

Thus, on 20 March too, Palau Vice-President J. Uduch Sengebau Senior visited the Prefectural Office and held discussions with Governor Tamaki. Among her statements, she noted, “I would like to thank you for your support in every aspect of our MOU. She made obvious her consideration of the depth of cooperation in the system planning.

From the next fiscal year on, the Prefecture will carry out such work as  a dispatch of experts in fisheries from its employees and cultural exchanges together with Palau. The planned aim is a strengthening of relations.

From the outset, the discussion concerned the establishment of a working team between the Prefecture and relevant officials of Palau’s Government. For that project, Vice-Governor Yoshimi Teruya and Palau’s Minister of State Gustav Aitaro will take responsibility. Thus they confirmed their commitment to advancing the project.

On the Okinawa side, the point of contact will be the Prefectural Cultural Exchange Promotion Office. On the Palau side, it was determined that Palau’s Ambassador to Japan would take on the job. In the future, working teams will be established in a variety of fields.

During the discussions, Governor Tamaki stressed, “Historically, Okinawa has had ties with Palau. We intend to make those relations even wider, as something powerfully strong.”

Palau’s Vice-President’s group came to our Prefecture on the Prefecture’s invitation. They inspected infrastructure such as bridge-building, fisheries related facilities, as well as the Okinawa Electric Power Company.

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

  2. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  3. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
