A Ground Self Defense Force (SDF) helicopter went missing in Okinawa Prefecture in the sea near Miyako Island. During the night of 13 April, several bodies, seemingly the passengers, were discovered on the floor of the sea near Miyako Island.
The local people have also been praying for progress in the search. “Slow Time”, a fishing boat connected to the Irabu Fishermen’s Association, requested its crew to assist by sailing their boat to the accident site. “I think it would be really difficult to send divers down to where the fuselage seems to have been discovered, because of the depth of the sea there,” opined the male captain (39) of the boat on the difficulty of the task. The submarine salvage ship “Chihaya,” which is to send divers down to the bottom of the sea, could be seen in the distance. From time to time, doubt could be seen in the captain’s eyes over whether there would be any trace in the flotsam. “From here on in, I’d still like to cooperate in the search,” said the captain.
A housewife (36), residing on Ikema Island, on hearing news of the discovery of what appeared to be the fuselage, prayed, “My thoughts are with the anxiety of the families of the soldiers and I hope they’ll be recovered and brought together as quickly as possible.”
On the same day, the SDF was also continuing its search by land and sea. At the crash site, 4 ships, including a submarine salvage ship were on patrol along with 6 aircraft.
Because of currents, prices of the fuselage may have floated off over a wide area. 290 soldiers searched shores, such as those around Irabu and Miyako Islands. Moreover, the sea bottom, around where the thing like a fuselage was found, is 100 meters down in places.
On 14 April, the SDF advanced work on saturation diving which can allow diver activity in the depths of the sea. However, the effort was canceled due to an equipment malfunction.
On 14 April, Okinawa Prefecture Governor Denny Tamaki held a press conference. He stated, “From my heart, I pray that the passengers be found and recovered as quickly as possible.”

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
