Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki held a press conference on 27 April, before the long Golden Week (GW) holidays. Considering the experience of the last 2 years, newly-infected Covid-19 patients might possibly increase after the extended holidays. So, the governor called for cooperation in infection prevention measures, noting, “How each and every one of our prefecture’s citizens passes that time is important.”
During the long holidays, a great many health facilities stop seeing patients, and so there is concern that they will congregate at emergency out-patient facilities. Thus, patients with minor problems or those coming for check-ups are requested to avoid emergency room visits. Also, people are being requested to have on hand a 3-day supply of food, an antigen test kit, and fever medicine in case of fevers and such.
Moreover, the governor encouraged consultations at the Fever Call Center and Child Medical Consultation reception points, published on the Prefecture’s specially set-up site. During the long holidays, the prefecture’s people will be actively mingling. The Covid-19 ranking system will change on 8 May to 5 grades in line with the Infectious Disease Law.
Governor Tamaki noted, “It’s an epidemic that we can never take for granted. Continue to follow the basic rules such as hand washing, good ventilation, and use of masks. I would like you to plan how to refresh your bodies and minds”
According to the Prefecture, the number of new Covid-19 patients on 27 April rose to 254, up 65 over the previous week. Since the beginning of April, the prefecture’s newly infected victims has been on the rise. As of 26 April, there were 90.01 new infections per population of 100,000. Thus, it rose higher than the average national rate of 55.41.
On 27 April, the rate of hospital beds in use was 11.9 percent. But, that is not enough to put a strain directly on medical care. However, It is still 3.7 points higher than the previous week. On Okinawa Island, medical care jumped up from phase 3A to 3B.

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
