The US Military plans to relocate the Kadena Air Base rust prevention servicing hangar to a new site, disregarding requests by Kadena and other districts in Okinawa. The revised plan offered will relocate the facility to an old apron nearby called Papa Loop, close to civilian residential areas.

On 28 April. Governor Denny Tamaki responded to the planned move, “It’s a terrible shame. I can’t help being outraged.” The Prefecture has again and again opposed the relocation plan of the rust prevention servicing hangar to the  Papa Loop area. The governor stated, “It’s wrong for this region’s burden to be further increased. I want to consider our ongoing response also in an exchange of ideas with Kadena District.”

Kadena District Mayor Hiroshi Toyama emphasized, “This facility will certainly have an impact on the environment of its surroundings. We can’t accept it being constructed near our civilian housing areas.” Explanations have been received from the Defense Ministry and others claiming that the facility will be safe. However, the mayor noted, “We’re well aware that, up to now, accidents within the base and their human causes have been insufficiently managed.”

The mayor also expressed his concern over safety guarantees and further pointed out his fear that the old Papa Loop apron would be constantly in use. The mayor requested, “I’m considering our next response. We’d like to get an in-depth explanation from both the US and Japanese governments.”

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated
