Governor Tamaki comments on the 2 F16 fighter jets still grounded at Shimoji Island Airport, “They must be linked to a very significant accident.” (17ap23)

On 8 April, 2 US AIr Force F16 fighter jets attached to the US Air Force base at Osan, Korea, made emergency landings at Shimoji Airport in Miyakojima City. (trans. note: If the F16s flew out of Osan, they were well past their combat radius, though within their ferry - empty of all cargo - range. Could they have been on a one-way flight to Taiwan?) On 14 April, 6 days later, they were still parked at that airport. On 15 April, it had become a full week since the emergency landings.
On the morning of 14 April, Governor Denny Tamaki held his scheduled press conference. He showed his concern over aircraft troubles, noting, “Very significant accidents invariably involve life and property.” To the US Military, he requested an open airing of the cause, measures to prevent a recurrence, with thorough safety checks and such during maintenance.
Asked about notification of the date of the aircraft taking off again, Governor Tamaki prudently noted, “When will the maintenance be finished? I wonder if even the US side can say for sure.” Furthermore, for the sake of flight safety, the governor stated, “In addition to meticulously carrying out the necessary checks, I’d like to have notification of their take off date.”
On the afternoon of 14 April, the Prefectural Base Response Section received notification through the Okinawa Defense Bureau stating, “Today there’ll be no take off, since maintenance will be ongoing tomorrow as well.”
Moreover, Shimoji Airport’s hours of operation are from 8 A.M. to 7:30 P.M.
There may be the thought of starting the engines to prepare for take off outside those hours. However the Prefecture is concerned over safety guarantees outside of operational hours. So, the Prefecture is requesting that take off be within operational hours and that prior notice of use of the airport be issued by the US side. On the afternoon of 15 April, such an airport use notice for a US Military C12 transport aircraft is said to have been issued by the US Military.

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
