Stressing adherence to Memo 5.5 that aircraft takeoffs and landings are impermissible, Governor Tamaki says he is ’confirming the suitability of details’ of the Japan-US agreement on a ‘T’ shape layout for the Naha Military Port relocation. (21ap23)

(NAGO) On the afternoon of 20 April, Governor Tamaki answered questions at the Northern District Prefectural Joint Office in Nago City from each media company for their reporting.
The Naha Military Port and Bay Facility ( Naha Military Port) is slated for relocation to Urasoe City. The Japan-US Joint Committee has offered a proposal for the new facility’s shape and such.
Governor Denny Tamaki expressed his thinking, “First, let’s get the location is the alternate facility and its shape confirmed. Then, I think a conference between the US and Japan can get underway. After a US-Japan agreement on that, we can confirm the suitability of the details. We’d like to get to an enquiry on the essentials.”
Currently, instances of aircraft taking off and landing at Naha Military Port have repeatedly occurred. The governor emphasized his thinking that he will request that Memo 5.5, agreed to by the U.S. and Japan at the time of Okinawa’s Reversion to Japan, be adhered to.
Moreover, the governor expressed his thinking, “The US Military and the Japanese Government have been declaring that takeoffs and landings will be a part of the new facility’s use. However, they don’t understand that they need the Prefecture’s acceptance. So, I would like to fervently, sternly, and continuously request that the scope of its activities not be broadened.”
Last October, the Defense Ministry issued a proposed ‘T’ shape for the relocation of the Military Port to the north of the civilian port section along the shoreline of Urasoe City as its proposed relocation site.
The US-Japan Joint Committee was expected to agree on the ‘T’ shape on the afternoon of 20 April.

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
