The Defense Ministry requests Okinawa Prefecture’s cooperation in the deployment of PAC3s, while the Prefecture requests that it be done ‘without anxiety or influence on people’s daily lives’. (25ap23)
Splendor of Okinawa: Oenothera, 19ap23
Japan is making preparations in case a North Korean spy satellite is launched and falls into Japanese territory. Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada has proclaimed his “Order to Prepare Measures for Destruction”. He further has ordered preparations to expand Patriot (PAC3) and other land-to-air guided missile (SAM) squads to every region within Okinawa Prefecture.
On 24 April, representatives from the Defense Ministry and Self Defense Force (SDF) met with the Governor’s Public Office Chief Masahito Tamari. They requested the Prefecture’s cooperation in the smooth expansion of PAC3 missile systems.
The Prefecture, for its part, called for total measures to be taken to preserve the safety, property, and lives of the prefecture’s people, and that ‘measures be taken so there will be no impact on the anxieties and daily lives of the prefecture’s people’. Moreover, the prompt issuance of information and such was requested. The discussions were conducted in private.
According to Prefecture sources, it has been determined that the locations for the PAC3 expansion will be in the island areas that have SDF facilities. The sources expressed the idea of also taking the defense systems of already deployed PACs to SDF facilities on Okinawa Island.
On 24 April, ahead of the SDF explanation, Governor Denny Tamaki had stated to the press corps for their reporting, “I would like The National Government’s explanation to be thorough and exhaustive.”
On 24 April also, Defense Ministry and SDF representatives visited the city halls of both Miyako and Ishigaki to offer their explanations. On 23 April, they had made their explanations to the Yonaguni District.

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
