(TOKYO) Governor Denny Tamaki visited Tokyo on 18 May to attend the Okinawa Promotion Research Committee (chaired by Yuko Obuchi) held at the Liberal Democratic (LDP) Headquarters.

The governor requested that his Okinawa promotion ‘Diet strategy’ be placed in the framework plan, which will become the guideline for 2024 budget formulation and administration policy. He had previously requested assistance for the 6th Okinawa Promotion Plan that the Prefecture had formulated for 2022.

Regarding his request on the framework plan, in response to reporters after attending the Research Committee, Governor Tamaki clarified the content of his request, “I would like to get their firm grasp of our principles, with clarity on our Diet strategy.”

The Prefecture had requested the establishment of a National Natural History Museum as assistance for its ‘New Okinawa 21st Century Vision Basic Plan’ put in motion in May of 2022 for the pivotal 50th anniversary of Okinawa’s Reversion to Japan. In addition, it had requested an investigation into and response to PFAS pollution continually being detected in amounts exceeding Environmental Ministry standards around US Military bases.

As for assistance with the new promotion plan, the governor stated, “The reality is that we really can’t map out progress with the Government's regional development support as is, with its large scale reductions in the  hard cash of lump sum subsidies.” The governor added, “In getting our budget, I’d strongly like to get my wish for a budget that truly reflects the earnest voices of our municipalities!”

Representatives of the Prefectural Association of the LDP and prefectural business groups also attended the day’s Promotion Research Committee. Opinions were also heard from interested parties on such subjects as tourism, aimed at a revival from the widespread contagion of Covid-19

After hearing requests from the LDP Prefectural Association and business groups, Chairperson Kobuto stated, “On the basis of the opinions we’ve received, we’ll put together our proposal.”

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
