Kube District 3 of Kushi in Toyama is adjacent to the new base construction site at Henoko in Nago, Okinawa. On the afternoon of 19 May, Governor Denny Tamaki began his meeting with its mayor and others at the Henoko District Community Center in Nago to exchange views. It was Governor Tamaki’s first meeting with the Kube District 3 mayor and his staff since taking office. Except for the opening of the meeting, the rest was held in private.

In his opening statement, the representative for District 3, Henoko District Mayor Shigeru Shimabukuro pointed out that this visit was after 4 years and 8 months had passed since Governor Tamaki’s first election.

Then the mayor greeted the governor stating, “We have requests for you on the outcome of the trial over the progress on the replacement base facility and Camp Schwab’s unlawful revocation. On cooperation related to promotion measures for establishing an alliance between the National Government and the city of Nago, we’d like an exchange of views, candidly if possible.”

Governor Tamaki stated, “As for the replacement facility, so far the details are various and sundry. I’m also totally aware of the complex feelings, inexpressible in simple words, of all of you in Kube District 3.”

The governor added, “I would like to widely and vigorously broaden our Prefecture’s administrative policies from now, based on our frank exchanges during this time you all let me have with you.”

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
