In response to North Korea’s missile launch on 31 May, the National Instant Alert System (J-alert) and the Emergency Network E-net) were activated by the National Government across all municipalities in Okinawa Prefecture.

Residents were called on to take shelter inside buildings or in basements by emergency cell-phone terminal messaging (Area Mail). Every region in the prefecture was aroused by Disaster Prevention Administration Radio alerts as well.

At 8:15 A.M., the Prefecture held its Crisis Management Countermeasures Headquarters Committee meeting, chaired by Governor Denny Tamaki. The committee jointly considered the timeline of the situation, damage, and such.

The Prefectural Police Headquarters reported it had confirmed that there were no calls on its 110 emergency number about or damage from the missile.

Governor Tamaki reported to the people of the prefecture, “In a violation of UN resolutions, with a situation where Typhoon 2 is approaching us, launching this missile can be called nothing short of absolutely deplorable. Hereafter as well, we want to  continue to serve in close coordination with the Nation and our municipalities to devote our total energy on assuring the security and peace of mind of our residents.”

On the other hand, the launch had  effects within Okinawa Prefecture on transportation facilities, such as the temporary shutdown of the monorail serving the Naha area. Also, after the J-alert was announced, schools prefecture wide asked parents and others to refrain from sending children to school. But when the alert was lifted, schools announced, “Children should go to school as usual”.

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
