(TOKYO) On 25 May, Governor Denny Tamaki visited Sports Director Koji Murofushi at the Ministry of Education, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT).

The governor requested that the 2034 National Sports Competition be hosted by Okinawa, stating, “Besides being an opportunity for the people of the entire prefecture to become familiar with sports, it will also offer goals for our children to carry into the next generation.”

Director Murofushi replied,  “The inspection committee and board of directors will carry out that division primarily through the Japan Sports Association.” However, he then added, expressing his forward looking attitude, “I’d like to work hard to keep you in step with the Sports Association.” A cheerful ambiance pervaded the meeting.

With his eye on the National Sports Competition as a tourist attraction, Governor Tamaki noted, “We can expect a ripple effect in tourism and economic activity from the competition. “He further stressed, “It would firm up the position we’ve mapped out as Sports Island Okinawa, as we spread our wings in flight before the world.”

Director Murofushi visited Nago in 2022, as temporary coach for spring training with the pro baseball team Nippon Ham. He referred to that visit repeatedly, noting, “The promotion of sports flourished. It could be called a Sports Heaven!”

In making his request, Governor Tamaki was joined by Prefectural Education Director Mitsuru Hanmine, Prefectural Sports Association Board Chairman Michiyuki Tokashiki.

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
