15 May marked 51 years since Okinawa’s Reversion to Japan. So, on 14 May, the 51 Years Post Reversion: 15 May Prefectural People’s Rally to Preserve Peace and Livelihood, sponsored by the rally’s executive committee, was held at the Okinawa Convention Center Theater Building in Ginowan.
According to the sponsor’s announcement, 1,400 gathered including participants from the 13 May Peace March and other prefectural residents to disapprove of the increase US-Japan governmental military deployment enhancements to counter the ‘Taiwan issue’ and to appeal for the realization of their island of peace where the livelihood of their prefecture’s residents will be protected.
As representative of the sponsor, executive committee joint representative Keiko Higa called on the participants, gathered from across the country, urging, “Our prefecture’s people are said to have faith that nothing is as foolish as war, nothing is as valuable as peace. We want all of you to take home a kernel of that peace from Okinawa and sow it everywhere!”
Governor Denny Tamaki also attended as a guest. He spoke of working with the National Government to lessen Okinawa’s excessive burden of bases. However, he also appealed to the participants, “Let’s not let the memory of the Battle of Okinawa fade and repeat the same mistakes. We have to hand down our lessons to the following generations. Let’s transmit to the whole world our Chimu Kukuru (Ryukuan: true heart), essential to the nurture of peace.”
The rally declaration was adopted by the applause of the participants. It pointed out that the aim of Reversion was a return to the pacifist Constitution, the sovereignty of the people, and respect for basic human rights.
Expressing their concern over attempts to revise the Constitution, the participants pledged, “We’ll put our entire strength into creating an Okinawa without bases, a peaceful Japan, and a world without war.”

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
