The “East Asian Exchange of Dialogue toward Okinawa as a Hub of Peace” Symposium was held at the Ryukyu Shimpo Hall in Izumi in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture. Governor Denny Tamaki and Former Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama offered their greetings.

The panel discussions were held in 3 sections. In the various sections, 11 took the podium, among them, politicians, experienced experts on China from Japan and abroad, economists,  and youth. They affirmed that to avoid war and create peace, it is essential to deepen dialogue and exchange among neighboring countries.

In the first section of the discussions, 4 took the podium: Former President of the Liberal Democratic Party and Defense Bureau Chief Taku Yamazaki, Professor and Associate Dean at the Institute of Modern International Relations at Tsinghua University Jiangyong Liu, Ryukyu University Professor Emeritus Masaki Gabe, and Aoyama Gakuin University Professor Emeritus Kumiko Haba.

Mr. Yamazaki touched on the Taiwan issue, emphasizing, “If the independence movement in Taiwan strengthens, China will certainly look toward armed unification.” He also pointed out that if the U.S. intervenes, Okinawa, and thus Japan, could be pulled into a war. He concluded, “We absolutely mustn’t let a war happen. The solution must come through dialogue!”

Alluding to the “3 documents”of the Japan-US Security Treaty’s National Security Strategy, Professor Liu noted, “That changes the relationship between Japan and China from one that is mutually beneficial to one that is antagonistic.” Regarding Japan’s progressive defensive build-up, he further claimed, “The build-up gives rise to a continuing phenomenon much like the front line of a battlefield.”

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
