On the 78th Memorial Day Anniversary, marking the end of the Battle of Okinawa, the memorial ceremony for the over 200,000 war dead to be held without restriction for the first time in 4 years. (23jn23)

Splendor of Okinawa: War dead remembered: even unweaned tiny twins Tokiko and Funiko, the flower of Ryukyu. (23jn23)

On 23 June, Okinawa looks forward to Spirit Memorial Day for dead of the Battle of Okinawa, including the multitude of civilians wrapped up in it in the final days of World War ll.

At the Peace Memorial Park at Mabuni in Itoman, the site of the final fierce battle 78 years ago, the Okinawa Mourning Service for All the War Dead will be held, sponsored by the Prefecture.

The prefecture’s people will pledge  their lesson that peace be pursued as their inheritance to future generations, during a moment of silence offered up to the over 200,000 who lost their lives. (Trans. note: The cenotaphs at the park are engraved with the names of all the identified dead from the battle, regardless of nationality.)

Governor Denny Tamaki and relatives of the dead and others will attend the ceremony. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and the speakers of both houses of the Diet, among others, have also been invited.

For the first time in 4 years without restrictions on participation by the general public, seating for 3,500 has been arranged. For 3 years in succession, the scale of the event had been cut back, due to the scourge of  Covid-19.

Governor Tamaki will present the keynote address, and Prime Minister Kishida and others will offer their comments.

Governor Tamaki will first take the podium with his message, “Through the Battle of Okinawa, we have learned the folly of war and the preciousness of peace. We have a mission to continue broadcasting to the World that ‘Life is our Treasure’ (Ryukyuan: Nuchi du- Takara). It’s our obligation!”

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
