On 28 July. During his visit to Hawaii, Governor Denny Tamaki inspected the US Marine Hawaiian base at Kaneohe Bay.
The governor held talks with Colonel Jeremy W. Beavens USMC, Commanding Officer, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, over accepting US Marines to be relocated from Okinawa to his base, requesting that the transfer proceed smoothly.
The colonel’s answer expressed his agreement. He noted, “Our plan is to carry out the content of what was agreed in the 2+2 Meeting, which is considered as continuing to the present.” However he made no concrete statement on the number of troops he will be taking in.
In the 2012 joint document, of Okinawa’s 19, 000 marines, 9,000 were to be distributed among Guam, Hawaii, and Australia. However, how many troops would be allocated to each base was left unclear.
After the base inspection, Governor Tamaki asked Colonel Beaven about communities around the base and communications with them. The colonel responded that he had regular meetings with local leaders and groups. He explained that opinions were exchanged with them about scheduled manœuvres, flight routes, and incidents, such as accidents, involving his troops.
The colonel is also said to have stated that, except where it was difficult considering overall security, he would respond to issues such as changes in flight timing whenever possible.
Governor Tamaki also attended a group discussion on the final day of the Japan-Hawaii Sisters Summit. He gave an address there on the need for the cultivation of human resources for tourism, in order to create a tourism sympathetic to the concept of striving for responsible tourism in Hawaii.
On 29 July, Governor Tamaki had a visit scheduled, among others, to the Hawaii-Okinawa Federation Committee. But, due to a typhoon nearing Okinawa, he had to cancel that schedule to return to his office.

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
