On 21 July, a meeting of the 3rd  Advisory Board on US Military Base Problems was held to hear opinions from experts about subjects such as  diplomacy regarding US Military base issues and the newest developments in the US-Japan Security Alliance.

The Prefecture made a report on its regional diplomacy, the Henoko new base construction issue, and its requests over Self Defense Force (SDF) deployments and use, in light of the revision of  3 documents in the US-Japan Security Treaty.

Governor Denny Tamaki and the board members also exchanged opinions on Okinawa’s role in striving for the creation of trust and easing of tensions that have arisen in the Asia-Pacific region.

In his opening statement, Governor Tamaki noted, “We’ve set to work on the Prefecture’s independent regional diplomacy. Okinawa would also like to play a role in contributing to peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific Region by increasing its activities in easing tensions and building trust.”

Except for its opening, the meeting was held in private. According to the Prefecture, during the private part of the meeting, members expressed opinions on the US Military developments in the Philippines and Palau, as well as its move to decentralize its training and such to Australia, with opinions expressed such as, “Could such activities could be connected to a decrease in Okinawa’s burden of bases?”

On a Taiwan crisis, it was pointed out, “It’s essential that there be consultation with Japan prior to any crisis where the the US Military might attack from US Military bases in Japan. That’s a judgment to be made by the National Government. Dialogue ought to continue, so that a Taiwan crisis not be provoked.”

In the event of a Taiwan crisis, it must be considered that not just bases in Okinawa will get targeted, but those all over Japan may be attacked. So, there were voices noting, “We must consider Japan as a whole to avoid that!”

As for the Prefecture, it proposed working on airing such points in question, such as the security of the Nation’s people, at the National Governor’s Conference.

A summary of the proceedings was scheduled for publication on the Prefecture’s home page the following day.

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
