The Ground Self Defense Force (GSDF) and the US Marine Corps, in conducting their Resolute Dragon joint exercises, have used Shin Ishigaki Airport for their GSDF V22 Osprey transport aircraft.

On word of this, Governor Denny Tamaki issued a comment, on 19 October, criticizing such use, “The Ospreys keep crashing one after another. Use of the Osprey, under such circumstances, in carrying out large scale Japan-US exercises, will cause anxiety among our prefecture’s people.”

On the other hand, in response to our reporting, Ishigaki City Mayor Yoshitaka Nakayama, noting that the Osprey had not flown over the city area and such, stated, “It’s no problem”.

However, the Prefecture had expressed its concerns over safety to the Okinawa Defense Bureau in both September and October and requested restraint in the use of GSDF Ospreys within the prefecture. So, Governor Tamaki complained, “It’s truly a pity that they’ve been taking off and landing at Shin Ishigaki Airport, with no heed to my 2 requests not to!” He further emphasized, “From the standpoint of the safety and peace of mind of our prefecture’s people, we will respond with warnings on the continued use of Ospreys in our prefecture.”

As the site of the Japan-US joint exercises, Ishigaki City has requested of the Okinawa Defense Bureau that there be no disruption of the daily lives of the city’s people when vehicles pass through it and that the Ospreys refrain from flights over its city areas.

Thus, in response to press coverage, Mayor Nakayama expressed his understanding of the use of the airport for Ospreys, stating, “These joint exercises are being carried out across the Nation under the Japan-US Security Treaty. We have received  reports that we’ve gotten their response to our City’s requests, so there’s no problem.”

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

Any suggestion on improving my translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
