Okinawa Prefecture Governor Denny Tamaki reported for work at the Prefectural Office on the morning of 30 October. In the afternoon at 2, first oral arguments are scheduled in the suit over the exercise of proxy in the case of the new base construction at Henoko in Nago. In response to queries from the press corps on his emotional state, the governor replied, “Clear mirror, still water (The state of my mind mirrors the clarity of still water).”


The governor’s official duties start at 9 in the morning. Governor Tamaki referred to the exercise of proxy suit in his intra-Prefecture broadcast for staff and visitors. He emphasized, “Because I consider the principle of regional autonomy enshrined in our Constitution and democracy itself precious, I will do my best to plead our cause.”


After the broadcast, the press corps once again eagerly queried the governor on the exercise of proxy. The governor responded,  “In our thought, we want to plead our consideration of whether we can somehow achieve the true public good of our prefecture’s people.” On the meaning of his 4-word phrase ‘clear mirror, still water’, the governor explained, “It was to say I wanted to respond with perfect serenity.”


The first oral arguments are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on 30 October at the Naha Branch of the Fukuoka High Court with Judge Takashi Miura presiding.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media. 


This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.

He repeatedly brought up dealing with operational improvements and such based on the voices of visitors to the park.  　 The CEO specifically mentioned the evening concerts in the park’s garden and, starting from December, the free entry of one child with each adult, targeting the prefecture’s people. CEO Kato stated, “We’d like to be contributing to Okinawa’s tourism as well.” Governor Tamaki, alluding to his speech the same day, entitled “Declaration on Sustainable Tourism”, stated, “For the people, employees, and tourists of our prefecture, this is an important win-win format.
