In response to Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki’s congratulations on the Taiwan Presidential Election, the Chinese side objects, claiming, “It was a grave violation of the One China concept”. (24ja24)

The Chinese Consulate in Fukuoka responded to Okinawa Prefecture Governor Denny Tamaki’s announcement of congratulations to  President-elect Lai Ching-te on his victory in the Taiwan Presidential Election. On its Chinese Language home page, the Consulate announced this statement, “We give notice of our strong dissatisfaction and firm objection.”

However, during his press conference, the governor did not breach the subject of the Taiwan problem. Nevertheless, the hardline stance of the Chinese side could cause ripples.

At his scheduled press conference on 18 January, Governor Tamaki was queried about the Taiwan Presidential Election and such. He replied, “As for the next President, I’d like to express my heartfelt congratulations to President-elect Lai, chosen by the Taiwan people in a democratic election.”

The governor also pointed out that the stable status of Taiwan is of special importance to the stability of international society. He noted, “We expect President-elect Lai to contribute to the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait.”

The Chinese statement criticized the governor for such as, “The governor gravely violated our basic One China principle.” The statement continued, “We are opposed to each and every type of public exchange between Japan and anyone related to China’s Taiwan territory. To those concerned, they should correct their errors themselves. They should adhere to the principle of One China. We further demand that they not send signals that err in strengthening ‘Taiwan Independence’.”

Last November, before the governor’s trip to Taiwan, a public relations officer of the Chinese Embassy in Japan made clear in talks, “We firmly object to any and all sorts of public traffic between Japan and Taiwan.”

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

Any suggestion on improving my translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
