Representative Ichiro Ohama (61) of the Ishigaki City Election District held a press conference in the city on 24 February. He announced his third run as the LDP  nominated candidate for the Prefectural Assembly Election, to be announced on 7 June with ballot opening scheduled for 16 June.

Representative Ohama will run on a platform emphasizing the promotion of the Outer Islands, touting, “I will bring to fruition a policy of Outer Island Promotion. As the opposition party in our Prefectural Assembly, we will seize  seats to take the majority. We want to greatly strengthen our capability as a check on the Prefectural Administration.

Representative Ohama is looking forward to the gubernatorial election in 2 years. He showed his desire for administrative reform by continuing his stance of policy dialogue with the National Government, noting, “I’m aiming for a prefectural administration where an administrative policy dialogue with the National Government is possible.”

Representative Ohama made an appeal on the achievements of his first 2 terms. He continued with a criticism, “I’ve been consistent in my promotion of the Yaeyama region’s remote islands. I’ve gone to the Prefectural Administration to request dealing with our issues. However, there have been no concrete administrative policies.”

The representative sees Governor Tamaki as the problem, “He doesn’t protest against China’s menacing pressure on our Senkaku Island Chain. He doesn’t closely look into the topic of safeguarding our own citizens. His attitude is obscure on the appeals of our mayors  and even the Nation  for the reinforcement of the airports and harbors of our Sakishima Outer Islands.”

In addition, the representative brought up Yaeyama topics: medical preparedness, reduction of the cost of travel between islands, a resolution of the handicaps of the agricultural, forestry, and fisheries industries, and regional preference in public works projects. He emphasized that he would continue to give his all to solve such issues.

Representative Ohama spoke of his determination for a third term, stating, “Making use of my political experience and personal connections up to now, in my third term, as well, I’ll push for the promotion of our Outer Islands. As an Assembly member born in these Outer Islands, I want to fling a stone at the Tamaki Prefectural Administration!”

The Ohama campaign intends to announce its concrete policies from April.

In Ishigaki City Election District 2’s Prefectural Assembly Election, current second-term Representative Masataka Jiroku has shown his intention to run again.

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

Any suggestion on improving my translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
