A new base is being built at Henoko in Nago for the relocation of the US Military Futenma Airfield. On 23 May, Governor Denny gave permission for the Okinawa Defense Bureau’s planned collection of  about 84,000 colonies of live coral species in Oura Bay for transplantation to make way for the construction work.

The governor received a directive from the Government to give his permission for the coral collection by 23 May. The Government was expected to file suit for proxy to forcibly take the measure in place of the Prefecture, if the Prefecture did not obey the directive.

The Prefecture proceeded to arrange the permission, since the loss of its lawsuit over the coral collection had been confirmed and the Supreme Court would not accept the Prefecture’s appeal on it.

On the Supreme Court’s decision, Governor Tamaki complained, “It’s a miserable shame that we were turned away at the gate, without the judiciary expressing any concrete judgment whatsoever.”

At any rate, the Government had already started work in the Henoko offing in January. So, it seems that the Prefecture decided that permission for the transplantation had to be given from the point of view of preserving the environment.

The Prefecture lost its original lawsuit in a 2021 Supreme Court judgment, but  permission is now granted to the Okinawa Defense Ministry to transplant about 40,000 coral colonies.

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

Any suggestion on improving my translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
