On 25 September, the Ryukyu Shimpo Company held its 60th Ryukyu Shimpo Award (for 2024) presentation ceremony and celebration at the Okinawa Harborview Hotel in Naha. About 170 people attended.
The award and a memento were presented to the 5 recipients to laud their contributions to the prefecture’s promotion and development in activities in the fields of meritorious service in Okinawa’s promotion, economics, business, culture, arts, and sports.
This year’s award recipients are: former Senator Keiko Itokazu for her service in Okinawa’s promotion, Kokuba Group Consultants Koichi Kokuba for economics and business, Okinawa University Professor Emeritus Hiroshi Nakachi for social and educational work, Living National Treasure in Ryukyu Traditional Music Kiyoyuki Ohwan for culture and arts, and former Pro Baseball Player Kazuhiko Ishimine for sports.
In his opening speech for the award ceremony, Ryukyu Shimpo Company President Hiroshi Fukuhara noted, “The Ryukyu Shimpo is delighted that it can honor these 5 recipients for taking up their share in handing down to future generations the valuable work they’ve done, each in their own field, as a source of grace and pride, bestowed on the lives of our prefecture’s people.
Guest Speaker Governor Denny Tamaki praised the efforts of the recipients, noting, “I would like to express my deep admiration to all of you for the contributions you’ve made to Okinawa’s development over all these long years.” He then added, “Next year we’re facing the pivotal 80th year since the end of the war. I would like to further advance measures for the realization of a society where nobody is left behind in taking on the intention of our forebears in their longing for peace in our prefecture.”

Denny in the News:
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving my translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
