On 21 September, Happy Earth Festival, an event to promote UN lauded SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) sponsored by its executive committee, was held at the Mihama Aeon Branch in Chatan, Okinawa Prefecture.
Governor Denny Tamaki and Actress IMALU held a talk show there on the theme of “Considering a sustainable rhythm for Okinawan tourism’s future fortune.”
In her introduction to to life in Kagoshima Prefecture’s Amami Oshima IMALU urged, “If you set yourself to work earnestly toward SDGs in your own bailiwick, you’ll link up with a far better future.”
IMALU has been carrying on life since two years ago in 2 locations, Amami Oshima and Tokyo. She said of her life, “In Amami, I just melt into the local people and even take part in the festivals of my hamlet. My house might even be considered a tourist site. But the local people protect and take care of me.”
IMALU said of tourism in Amami Oshima, “There’s no point in just having loads of people come to to the island. Even if I use my social media to proclaim the attractiveness of Amami, how would that connect to the good fortune of the local people? I think it’s difficult to strike a balance between problems such as the environment and business.”
In order to promote working with SDGs across the whole prefecture in coordination with Okinawa’s actual situation, Governor Tamaki explained his aggressive appeal to log enterprises and groups into his “Okinawa SDGs Partners” project, noting. “It’s essential to strike a balance among our society, economy, and environment. It’s also important to consider what we ourselves can do to enjoy ourselves in increasing our circle of connections. All of us can connect our own thinking to protecting Okinawa’s abundant environment.”

Denny in the News:
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving my translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
