On the afternoon of 17 September, the 9 candidates for the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) presidential election attended their regional lecture meeting, held at the Naha Arts and Culture Theater in Naha, the heart of Okinawa Prefecture. This election is actually to determine the next prime minister.
Each of the 9 candidates offered their own opinions on such topics as Okinawan administrative policy, its diplomacy, and its security guarantees. However, there was no place for anything like questions or cross debate of candidate opinions on that day.
The 9 candidates in attendance were: Minister for Economic Security Sanae Takeichi, former Minister foe Economic Security Takayuki Kobayashi, Chief Cabinet Secretary Toshimasa Hayashi, former Environment Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa, former Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato, Minister for Digital Transformation Taro Kono, former Party Secretary General Shigeru Ishiba, and former Party Secretary General Toshimitsu Motegi.
First to take the podium was Chief Cabinet Secretary Toshimasa Hayashi. After touting his meetings with Ginowan’s late Mayor Masanori Matsukawa, who had died suddenly, Secretary Hayashi expressed his desire for the speedy repatriation of Futenma Airfield, which lies in the center of Ginowan City. However, he made no concrete reference clarifying a time frame for the repatriation of Futenma base’s land.
Governor Denny Tamaki has requested a dialogue between the Government and the Prefecture over the new base construction at Henoko in Nago to accommodate the relocation of Futenma Airfield there. However not a single candidate referred to such a dialogue.
Outside the meeting venue, citizen groups held their protest.

Denny in the News:
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving my translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
