The 48th Okinawa Industrial Festival opened on the morning of 25 October in Naha City at Ounoyama Park and its Prefectural Budokan. On the Theme of “Prefectural Products in a Burst of Smiles. How Great!”,  426 businesses and groups are exhibiting their goods.

For the 3 days until 27 October, they will be spreading the appeal of Okinawan products such as food, awamori (Ryukyan gin), ornaments, toiletries, stone, and building materials. The executive committee of the festival expects the number of visitors to be near the 310,500 that came in 2023,  the largest number so far.

At the opening ceremony, the Executive Committee Director Noboru Kohatsu exhorted the visitors,  “As a joint showplace to introduce all the industries in Okinawa Prefecture, it has become like an autumn poem, a perfect chance to get in touch with the latest information.”

At the Budokan ( a martial arts and event facility), each vendor proudly hawks its wares at the bustling Uchina- (Ryukyuan: Okinawa)Trade Fair, with stalls for inventions and ideas and others for  crafts from the Nakagusuku Bay and Port New Port District.

Outdoors as well, there is a Chamber of Commerce Specialties Fair called the Arin-kurin (Ryukyuan: This and that) Market, and more, promoting regional specialty products. At the Awamori Booth, limited edition bottles are sold.

The opening hour for the festival is 10 a.m. The inside events close at 7 in the evening and those outside at 8.

Since there is no public parking at the site, the executive committee is calling on visitors to use public transport facilities or the specially provided parking lot on the west side of the Naha Military Port.

A shuttle bus runs from that lot to and from the event every 15 to twenty minutes.

Denny in the News:

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

Any suggestion on improving my translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
