On coming in to land at the Japan Self Defense Force (SDF) Yona Guni Base in Yonaguni Town, an SDF V22 Osprey transport aircraft experienced a hard landing accident, damaging a part of its fuselage.
In response, to the accident in the “Keen Sword US-Japan Joint Manoeuvers 25”, on 28 October Okinawa Prefecture Governor Denny Tamaki criticized the aircraft’s use, “I’ve issued requests to the US Marines and Air Force, as well as our SDF to employ self discretion in the use of Ospreys for training, but they pay no attention. So, having such an accident occur is deplorable beyond comprehension!”
Last November too, a US Air Force Osprey crashed in an accident off the coast of Yaku Island in Kagoshima Prefecture. In response, Okinawa Prefecture requested that the Okinawa Defense Bureau exercise self restraint in the use of SDF and US Military Ospreys within the prefecture, “while the basic cause of the accident remains undetermined”.
Governor Tamaki stated, “From the very start, the prefecture‘s residents have especially opposed the deployment of a machine like the Osprey. How should we be expected to react to their use in these manoeuvers? Even after these exercises are over I want to ask the Defense Ministry to carefully reconsider their use.”
Even though not considering protesting against exercises like Keen Sword, the governor added, “We’ll be keeping strict watch over whatever occurs during these exercises. If necessary, we’ll have to make requests.”
The Osprey has had repeated problems. So, the governor pointed out, “It’s been a defective aircraft from the start. We have no idea where or under what circumstances the next accident will happen. So, at any rate, we’re concerned whether this dangerous situation of the Osprey’s use is just one step short of becoming a part of our daily life.”

Denny in the News:
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving my translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
