Governor Denny Tamaki criticizes the drop of a load by a US Military Osprey, noting, “An error of even a few more inches could have ended in a tragic accident!”

On the morning of 21 January, Okinawa Prefecture Governor Denny Tamaki held his regular press conference. He took up the topic of the accident in which a US Marine MV22 Osprey mistakenly dropped a 400-450 kilo load into the sea around Ie Island Auxiliary Airfield. 


The Governor criticized the mistake, noting, “An error of even a few more inches could have ended in a tragic accident! Such accidents cause unease among the surrounding communities.”


The governor further expressed his intention of requesting the Marines and the Okinawa Defense Bureau to determine the root cause of the accident and prevent its recurrence.


On 16 December, the Marines were carrying out training on dropping pallets loaded with rations. The Marines explained, “Due to an unanticipated change in the wind, the payload missed the appointed drop zone and landed in the sea.”


As of now, no damage or personal injury has been confirmed. However, Governor Tamaki questioned, “How could such training be carried out without consideration of factors such as weather conditions? We’re considering the inclusion of a request, either oral or written,  that we expect an absolutely thorough determination by investigation of the root cause along with recurrence prevention.”


Moreover, he appealed for their consideration of the region, warning, “Training sites have been established at surrounding uninhabited islands. I would think they’d consider training there, where it wouldn’t impact local communities. If they purposely insist on using areas that can lead to personal injury, they’re just inviting a backlash!”

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

Splendor of Okinawa: Temple Tree, Mihama Beach, 1de25 CEO Takeshi Kato of Japan Entertainment (JE), which manages JUNGLIA Okinawa, visited Governor Denny Tamaki at the Prefectural Office on 28 November.  　 The CEO reported on the 4 months since the attraction’s opening. He repeatedly brought up dealing with operational improvements and such based on the voices of visitors to the park.  　 The CEO specifically mentioned the evening concerts in the park’s garden and, starting from December, the free entry of one child with each adult, targeting the prefecture’s people. CEO Kato stated, “We’d like to be contributing to Okinawa’s tourism as well.” Governor Tamaki, alluding to his speech the same day, entitled “Declaration on Sustainable Tourism”, stated, “For the people, employees, and tourists of our prefecture, this is an important win-win format.
