Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki claims the Prefecture will not withdraw its budget proposal due to the LDP-Komeito resolution to scrap it, without “any basis”. (21fe25)

The Okinawa Prefectural Assembly has adopted a motion to “return” the 2025 Preliminary General Budget Proposal and hand it to the relevant authority.

However, at the opening of his press conference at 6:30 p.m. on the evening of 17 February, Okinawa Prefecture Governor Denny Tamaki stated, “The situation is that our budget proposal has been presented to the Assembly. We’d  again certainly like to have it deliberated.” He further expressed his intention of not having it revised or scrapped.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs, in response to the Prefectural Assembly General Affairs Bureau’s request for clarification, advised, “In addition to there being no real action as a basis for the return of the proposal, it must be observed that the said  budget proposal already remains, just as is, at the Assembly.”

The fuss over the 2025 Preliminary General Budget Proposal is due to the inclusion of a budget of about 40 million in yen to fund operations at the Prefecture’s Washington Office.

So, the opposition Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) submitted a motion claiming, “This budget ought not be set before the Assembly.” With its ally Komeito making a majority, the LDP passed the motion, and the bill, with the so-called “return” document, was to be sent off to the pertinent authority.

However, since there is no stipulation for such a motion in regional autonomy law, the Prefecture confirmed with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and others the procedures for dealing with the issue.

Denny in the News:

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
