Issues have arisen over the paper corporation set up to operate Okinawa Prefecture’s Washington Office. So, a remand motion to put on hold the new 2025 General Budget Initial Proposal, which contains the Office’s operational expenses, has been adopted by the Prefectural Assembly.

On 17 February, responding to the problem, Governor Denny Tamaki noted, “There is no legal basis for such a remand.” As of the present, he clearly is not considering responding by cutting the funds from the budget proposal.

However, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) faction, which submitted the motion, has committed to its plan of sticking to its refusal of deliberations. At the 12 February General Assembly, the motion was adopted by the LDP and Komeito, the two parties which hold the majority in the Prefectural Assembly.

On 17 February, as a result of of consideration to the answer to his inquiry from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, affirming, “Based on the Regional Autonomy Law, remanding a legislative proposal is inconceivable”, the governor stated, “In addition to offering our original proposal, we’d like to have deliberations on it.”

Having heard the governor’s reply, the LDP Headquarters insisted, “The Assembly’s resolution not to deliberate the budget proposal is weighty,” adding that, in the absence of withdrawal of the Office expenses, the headquarters was confirming its plan to stick to its  posture so far of not responding to any and all deliberations.

Denny in the News:

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
