Upper House Representative Tetsumi Takara (71, elected for one term in the Okinawa election District) of the local political party Okinawa Social Mass Party held a press conference in Naha on 17 March. He announced that he would not run in this summer’s House of Councilors election.
Following his first term, he had previously expressed his intention to be the chosen candidate of the All Okinawa force, which supports Governor Denny Tamaki. However, as he did not respond with support for All Okinawa’s backed unity candidate in last year’s Okinawa 4th District Lower House election, an uproar was raised by the other parties in it.
The problem arose in Prefecture’s 4th District, when Representative Takara did not support the novice candidate of the Constitutional Democratic Party, chosen in unity with All Okinawa.
The Social Mass Party, in February of this year, decided on a cleanup which ended Representative Takara’s role as party chief, with a request for understanding from other parties in All Okinawa. However, his party did not fill his slot with another candidate.
At his press conference, Representative Takara stated, “I have decided not to run for reelection for the sake of unity in All Okinawa.” So, All Okinawa plans to decide on a unity candidate in the middle of this month.
The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has already announced Ryo Okuma (38) as its candidate for the summer House of Councilors election, and Sanseito has announced that Tomohisa Wada (65), a novice as well, has been picked to run for the House of Representatives election.

Denny in the News:
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
