On 29 May, Prime Minister Ishiba was presented with a Kariyushi shirt, the formal summer wear of Okinawa Prefecture.

During Okinawa Prefecture Governor Denny Tamaki’s visit to the Prime Minister’s Residence, he handed out 3  Kariyushi shirts,  as presents, one each to Prime Minister Ishiba, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi, and Okinawa and the Northern Territories Minister Ito.

The shirt presented to Prime Minister Ishiba was white with blue flowers in a “palace flower motif, woven into the fabric as brocade. The white and blue signify Okinawa’s sand beaches and sea.

Prime Minister Ishiba stated, “This shirt is not only cool, but, with its design of various animals and plants, it is one of a kind, and uniquely creative. We’d like to do our best to spread word of this style.”

While the group was being photographed, the Prime Minister added, “Just looking at it, I decided I wanted to try it on!”

In order to promote “cool business’ to pass summers with lightweight clothing, at the next cabinet meeting on 3 June, the Prime Ministee plans to have his entire Cabinet decked out in Kariyushi wear.

Denny in the News:

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
