Today (26 May), in Naha, Okinawa, a male US Marine lance corporal was arrested on suspicion of a collision  with a passenger car, causing injuries to 4 elementary school students, fleeing the accident scene, and other charges.

The suspect, arrested for causing injuries by negligent driving and fleeing the accident scene, is US Marine Lance Corporal Ivan Garcia-Martinez (20), stationed at Camp Hansen.

According to the Prefectural Police, at around 10:30 on the Naha National Highway, the accused Garcia-Martinez lost control and crashed his car into a water tank set up between the highway and a side road, then continuing forward ran into a passenger car.

The passenger car that he hit rolled over, injuring the family of five inside, including 4 elementary school boys and girls.

The accused Garcia Martinez ran off from the scene of the accident, but he was sighted on the sidewalk about 100 meters ahead by a police officer and detained under emergency arrest.

The suspect’s breath test measured about twice the standard and he denied part of the accusations, saying, “Without a doubt, I caused the accident, but I didn’t refuse them help.”

Okinawa Prefecture Governor Denny Tamaki commented. “The US Military authorities are normalizing the anxieties that our prefecture’s people nave. If we don’t work together, these especially enormous concerns can’t be controlled.”

To the US Military side, Okinawa Prefecture Governor Denny Tamaki emphasized his intent that it should issue an especially strong warning.

Denny in the News:

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
