(TOKYO) Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) House of Councilors Member Shoji Nishida responded on record to queries from the press squad at the National Diet. 


Mr. Nishida once again claimed the legitimacy of his own statements, such as that the explanatory display at the Himeyuri Monument in Itoman was “a rewriting of history”.


Mr. Nishida further asserted, “The Sankei Newspaper Company’s account was reasonable as written”. But he offered no opinion in response to the 29 May resolution of protest requesting an apology and retraction of his statements by the Prefectural Assembly.


In “Sound Reasoning the July Edition”, published on 30 May by the Sankei News Company, his own submitted article was titled “The True Meaning of my Revised Statements on the Himeyuri Monument”.


Mr. Nishida claimed to the press squad, “I wrote the truth that, at the Himeyuri Monument, there was a display narrating that the US Army fought off the Japanese Army’s invasion.” 


In “Sound Reasoning”, he had pointed out that, before the renewal of the Himeyuri Peace Prayer Archive Museum in 2021, there was such a display. Moreover, Mr. Nishida claimed, “The text displayed there said that the war was begun by Japan’s ‘invasion’ and ended by  the ‘advance’ or ‘counter attack’ of the US Army. Moreover, the display added that, in the view of the Tokyo (War Crimes) Court, ‘the US Army was good and the Japanese Army was bad’.”


Touching on the Prefectural Assembly’s protest resolution, he made such comments as, “As for criticism and blame, shouldn’t we together calmly face the truth? I have to apologize for any hurt feelings among the Okinawan community from my statements, in light of TPO (time, place, and occasion: appropriateness). However, the truth is the truth. So I must clearly tell it like it is.”

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

Splendor of Okinawa: Temple Tree, Mihama Beach, 1de25 CEO Takeshi Kato of Japan Entertainment (JE), which manages JUNGLIA Okinawa, visited Governor Denny Tamaki at the Prefectural Office on 28 November.  　 The CEO reported on the 4 months since the attraction’s opening. He repeatedly brought up dealing with operational improvements and such based on the voices of visitors to the park.  　 The CEO specifically mentioned the evening concerts in the park’s garden and, starting from December, the free entry of one child with each adult, targeting the prefecture’s people. CEO Kato stated, “We’d like to be contributing to Okinawa’s tourism as well.” Governor Tamaki, alluding to his speech the same day, entitled “Declaration on Sustainable Tourism”, stated, “For the people, employees, and tourists of our prefecture, this is an important win-win format. In the House of Councilors Election for the Okinawa Election District, independent candidate Sachika Takara (46), endorsed by All Okinawa, which opposes the relocation of the US Military Futenma Airfield in Ginowan to Henoko in Nago, both in Okinawa Prefecture, scored a victory.
