In order to make Okinawa’s base issues more widely understood within the prefecture, Governor Denny Tamaki held his Talk Caravan at Ryukyu University to grapple with the subject on 28 July.

Since taking office, Governor Tamaki has been engaged in his Talk Caravans and on 28 July he held one at Ryukyu University to deepen the understanding of base issues among the youth who will bear the weight of future generations.

Within his talk, he alluded to the relocation of Futenma Airfield to Henoko in Nago, claiming, “At the Supreme Court, the Prefecture’s claims were not acknowledged.” So, Governor Tamaki emphasized, “The problem is that the Liberal Democrat Party does not reflect the will of the people”.

More at length, the governor stated, “According to the courts, what has become abundantly clear is that Japanese law has loopholes. While up to now the National Government has pursued regional autonomy, why does it turn to prohibited moves? I feel unease and even strong anger over this kind of suspiciousness that is being carried out at the upper levels of our Nation’s government.”

Moreover, to the youth who will carry the weight of future generations, he talked of his wish that their thinking be their own. The assembled students and others listened with rapt attention.

Students in attendance offered their impressions. One noted on the base issue, “My understanding  wasn’t very deep. But hearing today’s speech, I was able to reevaluate the current state of affairs and where it will take us.

Another student added, “After hearing today’s speeches, since I myself am someone from Okinawa, l was truly moved by how important it is to consider all this from various viewpoints.

In addition, at the Talk Caravan, others also took part in the podium, such as Ryukyu University expert in administrative law, Professor Hiroto Tokuto and expert in international politics, Associate Professor Akiko Yamamoto.

Denny in the News:

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
