Splendor of Okinawa: Loving Centaury, roadside Uruma, 12 jy24

In the Okinawa Election District of the House of Councilors Election, with ballots opened on 20 July, novice candidate Sachika Takara (46), who had run as unaffiliated but endorsed by All Okinawa’s forces with support from the Constitutional Democratic, Communist, Socialist, and Social Masses Parties, was confirmed victorious.

Ms. Takara campaigned on issues dear to the hearts of voters, such as measures against the high price of goods, and the elimination of the temporary gas tax rate. In addition, she called out the National Government over her concerns about the new base construction at Henoko and showed her stance of clear opposition to the relocation of Naha Military Port to the western coastline of Urasoe.

Prefectural Governor Denny Tamaki, who had served as her campaign headquarters chief, supported her, and Diet members related to opposition to the National Administration also endorsed Ms. Takara.

Since last year’s Diet elections, the forces of All Okinawa, have suffered a string of defeats in mayoral elections,  and so feel avenged. But the influence of this victory on next year’s gubernatorial election remains to be seen. Ms. Takara will succeed Tetsumi Takara (71), who will step down on the expiration of this term.

Novice candidate Ryo Okuma (38) was endorsed by the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Komeito. During the election cycle, Prime Minister Shigeru Ichiba, Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, and LDP Secretary General Hiroshi Moriyama went all out to support him, but even with the total backing on every front by the ruling party and the administration, he failed to meet the mark.

Sachika Takara was born on 16 January 1979 and is a native of Naha. She did her doctoral studies at Kita Kyushu City University Graduate School, with majors in gender studies and constitutional law, and until now has been a professor at Okinawa University.

Ms. Takara has also been a joint representative on the executive committee of the Prefectural Peoples Conference on the Prevention of Sexual Assault Crimes by US troops

Denny in the News:

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
