The Okinawa Shogaku Baseball Team won its first championship at the 107th National High School Baseball Tournament at Koshien Stadium.
In recognition, on 14 October, the team was presented a Prefectural People’s Merit Award. Coach Koya Higa, who led the team, received a Prefectural Sports Special Leadership Award.
In addition, Hyogo Prefecture’s Amagasaki Municipal Brass Band Conductor Yasutaka Haneji (77), a native of Irabu Island in Okinawa, was handed a Certificate of Gratitude for conducting his band in cheering on teams representing Okinawa at Koshien over many years.
At the presentation ceremony on the first floor of the Prefectural Office, about 200 supporters were gathered.
Governor Denny Tamaki lauded the recipients joyfully, noting, “You’ve made a great impression on our prefecture’s people. Now, 80 years after the war’s end, you’ve become a hope for our children who will carry on our future.”
Captain Takuto Makishi, representing the team, gave thanks for the award, noting, “We’ve received this award for merit. But the fact of our ability to achieve victory at Koshien was thanks to the support of all of you, our prefecture’s people!”
Special Award recipient Coach Higa promised, “Hereafter as well, I’d like to devote myself to raising the level of not just baseball, but all sports in Okinawa!”
Gratitude Certificate recipient Conductor Haneji enthusiastically stated, “I’ve continuously cheered on our Okinawan teams for 45 years. As long as my health holds out, I’ll keep cheering them on!”

Denny in the News:
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
