On 21 October, Governor Denny Tamaki responded on record to press corps queries, after learning of the Takaichi Cabinet solidified lineup.

He requested a speedy dialogue with her on the reduction of the burden of US Military bases and a concrete reform of the US-Japan Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) for the sake of Okinawa’s development.

The governor also expressed his sense of wariness over the new prime minister’s policy on such items as the accelerated reform of the 3 Security Documents that her  Liberal Democratic (LDP) and Isshin Party coalition has been touting, noting, “With a sense of wariness, we have to keep a close watch over such matters.”

Governor Tamaki is requesting the reopening of an already existing committee and such, as well as a hopefully speedy direct dialogue with Prime Minister  Sanae Takaichi on such items as a meeting to expedite a reduction in the burden of Futenma Airfield

The governor requested, “We can’t accept that the new base construction at Henoko is the only solution. I’d like to express my stance in a dialogue between  her Administration and Okinawa.”

The governor stressed his sense of wariness, noting, “There’s a deviation in our usual defense posture”, because the LDP-Isshin coalition is touting counter attack capacity against enemy bases. He had rather expected policies for free education and free school lunches.

Denny in the News:

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
