On 26 December, Governor Denny Tamaki proclaimed the top news of his administration this year, selected by each of his departments.

Two items were selected as top: the carrying out of the Peace Memorial Project marking the 80th year since the war’s end, through the combined efforts of the whole Prefectural staff, and, as part of the memorial service for the war dead, the visit to Okinawa of the whole Royal Family.

Governor Tamaki repeatedly noted, “Along with creating the opportunity for our prefecture’s people to contemplate peace, these events broadcast to the world, both within and outside our nation, the heart of Okinawa’s yearning for peace.”

Apart from administration matters, the governor also lauded  the victory of Okinawa Skogaku High School at the Koshien Tournament and the presentation of the Prefectural People’s Honor Award to the team, the presentation of the same award to US Major League Los Angeles Dodgers Coach Dave Roberts, a native of Okinawa, for leading his team to win the World Series, and the selection of the Ryukyu Golden Kings to receive the Prefectural People’s Sports Honor Award for their championship in the Basketball Emperor’s Cup, all exhibiting the prefecture’s active prowess in the realm of sports.

The governor also noted progress in measures to benefit coming generations, such as his project to provide free meal assistance to schools and other measures directed at children and youth.

The governor further brought up the issues of the water pipe breakage and inspections into the sources of PFAS pollution.

Denny in the News: Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
